Mounjaro (tirzepatide) injections for weight management
What is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable medicine used to support weight management in adults living with obesity, or who are overweight and have a weight-related health condition. It is given as a small injection under the skin (usually the stomach, thigh or upper arm) once a week, and is always used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
Tirzepatide is a newer type of weight-management medicine that works on two of the body's own appetite-regulating hormone pathways at the same time. It is prescribed only after a doctor has confirmed it is clinically appropriate for you.
That is where Doctor Care Anywhere comes in: you can speak to a private GP by video, often within a short time, to talk through your weight, your health and whether a medication route could be suitable for you.
How and why it works for weight management
Mounjaro mimics two natural gut hormones, GLP-1 and GIP, that your body releases after eating. By acting on both, it helps to:
- Reduce appetite and food cravings, so you feel hungry less often
- Increase feelings of fullness, so you feel satisfied with smaller portions
- Slow the rate at which the stomach empties, which helps you stay fuller for longer
- Support steadier blood-sugar control, which can influence appetite
In practice, most people notice a reduced appetite within the first week or two. Weight loss then tends to build gradually over several months as the dose is increased. Because it changes appetite rather than willpower alone, many people find it easier to stick to healthier eating habits. The medicine works best when combined with lasting lifestyle changes and regular clinical review.
Dosing at a glance
Mounjaro is started at a low dose to help your body adjust and to reduce side effects. Treatment usually begins at 2.5 mg once weekly for the first four weeks, then increases in steps every four weeks according to how you respond and what your prescriber advises, up to a maximum of 15 mg once weekly. Your clinician will agree the right dose with you, and you should never adjust it yourself.
Private access versus NHS access
NHS
Mounjaro was approved by NICE for treating obesity on the NHS in December 2024, but NHS access is being introduced in phases and is often limited to specialist weight management services, with strict eligibility and, in many areas, long waiting lists. That means not everyone who might benefit can access it quickly, or at all, through the NHS right now.
Private
A private route offers a faster, more flexible alternative. With Doctor Care Anywhere you can book a private virtual GP appointment at a time that suits you, discuss your options with a doctor, and, if treatment is considered appropriate, be signposted to the right next step without waiting for a specialist referral.
Can I get it through Doctor Care Anywhere?
Yes, the journey starts with a doctor. You can book a private virtual GP appointment with Doctor Care Anywhere to discuss your weight and your general health. If, after that assessment, a weight-management medication is considered clinically appropriate for you, your DCA clinician can signpost you to DCA's weight management partner, who can support the next stage of care including prescribing and ongoing monitoring where suitable. If medication is not the right option for you, your GP can talk through the alternatives. Nothing is prescribed without a clinical assessment first.
Pros and cons
Potential benefits
-
Significant weight loss for many people in clinical studies. Some participants lost around a fifth of their starting body weight over roughly 72 weeks on the highest dose, alongside diet and exercise
-
Once-weekly dosing, rather than daily
-
Reduced appetite that can make healthier choices feel more manageable
-
Doctor-led access, with a private GP assessing suitability and arranging appropriate follow-on care
Things to weigh up
-
Side effects are common, especially early on. Most often nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion and stomach discomfort, which usually ease over time
-
It involves a weekly injection, which not everyone is comfortable with
-
Weight tends to return if the medicine is stopped without maintained lifestyle changes
-
It is not suitable for everyone, including during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and for people with certain medical conditions
-
As a private prescription it involves an ongoing cost
Is it right for you?
Mounjaro is generally considered for adults with a higher body mass index (BMI), or a raised BMI plus a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea. Suitability always depends on your individual health, medical history and any other medicines you take. A DCA doctor will review all of this with you before deciding whether treatment is appropriate, and signpost you to the right next step from there.
Frequently asked questions
You start with a private virtual GP appointment. If your DCA doctor considers weight-management medication appropriate after assessing you, they can signpost you to DCA's weight management partner for the next stage of care. Nothing is prescribed without a clinical assessment first.
It varies from person to person. Appetite often reduces within the first week or two, while noticeable weight loss usually builds gradually over several months as the dose increases. It is not a quick fix and works best with diet and activity changes.
The injection uses a very fine, short needle and goes just under the skin. Most people find it causes little more than a brief pinch, and it becomes easier with practice.
Appetite usually returns to how it was before, and weight can come back if healthier habits are not maintained. Any decision to stop should be discussed with your prescriber.
Most side effects are mild to moderate, digestive and temporary. Rarely, more serious effects can occur. Your prescriber will explain what to look out for and when to seek help, and you should always read the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine.
